What is a beat calculator?

A beat calculator turns a song's tempo into the numbers an editor actually works with: how many frames fall between beats, how many milliseconds each beat lasts, and where every beat lands on the timeline. Give it a BPM (beats per minute) and your project's frame rate and it returns the frames per beat, frames per bar, and a full grid of beat markers you can drop straight into Avid, Premiere or Resolve. Cutting to music means landing edits on the beat, but timelines count in frames, not beats — so you constantly need to convert BPM to frames. Doing that by hand, and rounding it wrong, is how a montage drifts out of sync. This tool does the BPM-to-frames math exactly at 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94 and 60 fps, drop-frame included, and runs entirely in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Enter the BPM — type it, tap it out with the TAP button (or the T / Space keys), or drop an audio file to detect the tempo locally.
  2. Pick your project frame rate and beats per bar; read the frames per beat, milliseconds per beat and frames per bar instantly.
  3. Set a start timecode and grid length, choose the density (every beat, every bar…), then Generate a marker grid and copy it or export Avid markers (TXT) or CSV.

When editors use it

Building a music montage or sizzle to a track, syncing motion-graphics hits to the downbeat, placing flash-frames or cuts on the beat, or laying a beat grid before you start so every clip snaps to tempo. The reverse mode also finds the implied BPM from a frame interval or two timecodes — handy when you know the cut rhythm you want but not the tempo. Because frames per beat is often fractional (24 fps at 120 BPM is exactly 12 frames, but 100 BPM is 14.4), the tool shows the rounding pattern so your grid stays honest over a long sequence instead of creeping off-beat.

How do I convert BPM to frames?

Frames per beat = (60 ÷ BPM) × frame rate. At 24 fps, 120 BPM is exactly 12 frames per beat; at 100 BPM it's 14.4, so beats alternate between 14 and 15 frames. The calculator does this for any BPM and frame rate, drop-frame included, and shows the rounding pattern.

Can it detect the BPM from a song?
